Danube Delta

            Tulcea, which is the last city crossed by the Danube, offers a unique landscape of one end of the world. It is the youngest piece of earth in Europe, situated in the neighborhood of one of the oldest mountains of the Planet, namely the Macin mountains, which are almost 400 million years old. Piece of earth and water, with a multitude of channels, grinds and small streams, which give the place a very tropical aspect, Tulcea city improves the conditions for fluvial-maritime transport.

            The Danube Delta’s gate, as it is also named, Tulcea represents the beginning of an unforgettable adventure in the Delta. Streaming from the eastern slopes of the Black Forest mountains of Germany, crossing through eight countries and three capitals, covering an area of 2.857 km, the Danube, which is the second largest river in Europe, ends its itinerary by forming, before its overflowing into the sea, one of the most beautiful delta in the world.

            The history of the Danube Delta started more than 100 years ago, through the accumulation of many successive alluvial deposits, which would later fill the maritime gulf, situated at the Danube’s overflowing into the Black Sea. The alluvial ridges and the marine sand form the big grinds and islands of the Delta, namely Letea and Caraorman. Due to this phenomenon, the three water branches of the Danube form: Sf. Gheorghe (69.7 km), Sulina (63.7 km) and Chilia (120 km). Between these three water branches, a lot of natural bounds form, such as channels and lakes, which shelter a magnificent vegetation and fauna. The entire area of the Delta is of 5800 square meters, this including the Razelm - Sinoe lagoon complex.

            The Crisan village, situated on the banks of the Sulina branch, 45 km far from Tulcea, is a specific fishing village, come into being in 1894, after the inauguration of the channel. Here one can also find the International Centre for Information and Research of the Danube Delta’s Biosphere, inaugurated at October 2nd, 1994.
